Loretta Lynn: Mem'ries of a Coal Miner's Daughter
 
Developed, directed, designed, and performed by Lisa Woods as part of Kentucky Humanities' Chautauqua program. Telling Kentucky’s stories, and celebrating one of Country Music’s most iconic voices. Born in a one-room cabin in Butcher Holler, Loretta Lynn rose from humble beginnings to become a groundbreaking singer-songwriter whose lyrics gave voice to the everyday struggles and triumphs of working-class women.

Audiences have said this production "caught all the charming history of a Kentucky Gal" and
"you felt like she really was Loretta Lynn".

Program excerpts: "A Note from the Director" 

Our setting for this production is a timeless and unspecified era - it could be 50 years from now, it could be 100 years ago. This is, simply, a community of devout Christians. They are hardworking farmers who are for the most part not wealthy.  (...) The cross center stage represents both the religious fervor responsible for committing atrocities in the name of God, and ultimately serves as an icon of honor for those who refused to confess to witchcraft - a lie that might have saved their lives, but would have cost them their souls.
By choosing to tell the story of The Crucible in 2025, I believe we have an opportunity to ask ourselves: who in our community is being targeted simply for being other? What happens when a rigid interpretation of religion and faith dominates our courtrooms? What might the fallout be of a society that suppresses and disempowers young women? What policies are being fueled by greed? Do we look the other way when our neighbors are accused? Will we sacrifice our friends in order to save ourselves? And perhaps most importantly, what is the thing for which we are willing to die before we will sacrifice our souls? What is our name worth?
This production stands on the foundation of history, but it exists for our community here today in 2025.
I invite us all, as Miller did, to consider this story in the light of our own world
and the events surrounding us.

Thread and Bone

 

A solo-play written, directed, designed, and performed by Lisa Woods, Thread and Bone is a sometimes funny, always honest work that is part memoir, part eulogy, and part dressmaking project.
Deconstructing and rebuilding a dress while performing, this play is a celebration of the ways grief and memory can un-make and re-make us all.  

Reviewers have called Thread and Bone “delicate and strong, thoughtful and forward thinking” and "devastatingly beautiful”. 


Thread and Bone premiered at the Chicago Fringe Festival where it received the Volunteer Choice Award. It has since appeared at the Cincinnati Fringe Festival, and The Waterworks St. Augustine.
